Abstract
In recent years, gamification has received growing attention in educational technology for enhancing learning motivation and effectiveness. However, few studies focus on how gamified interfaces can address the challenges faced by international students learning Mandarin in Taiwan. This study applies the Double Diamond process and user experience methods to develop “YUYO,” a gamified Mandarin learning app. The app includes task-based challenges, virtual rewards, progress tracking, and personalized settings to improve learner motivation and performance.A mixed-methods approach was adopted. Questionnaires were used to identify user needs and pain points, guiding the prototype design. This was followed by user testing and semi-structured interviews to gather feedback on interface usability, learning tasks, and gamification mechanisms. Data analysis combined quantitative ratings with qualitative insights.Findings show strong user engagement with features like YuCoin, XP, badges, and leaderboards. Location-based challenges with voice instructions improved participation and word retention. Users appreciated the app’s emphasis on traditional characters, Zhuyin, and localized content. This study confirms that gamified interfaces enhance Mandarin learning motivation and outcomes. It proposes a context-immersive, task-driven design strategy that offers practical insights for future language learning tools and contributes to design and educational technology research.
