zh_TW
This study examines young adults’ acceptance of three forms of premarital sexual behavior—kissing, petting, and sexual intercourse—at ages 21–22 (emerging adulthood), and analyzes how individual characteristics and behaviors, as well as family-interaction factors, are associated with that acceptance. Data were drawn from the Wave 8 youth sample of the Taiwan Youth Project (TYP). Three items measuring acceptance of premarital sexual behavior—kissing, petting, and sexual intercourse—served as the dependent variables, and item-specific analyses were conducted. The study included predictors spanning two domains: (1) individual characteristics and behaviors—gender, self-esteem, smoking and drinking experience, and gender-role attitudes; and (2) family interaction—parents’ marital relationship, relationships with father, mother, and siblings, and parental disciplinary practices. The study employed independent-samples t tests, Pearson’s product–moment correlations, hierarchical multiple linear regression models, and between-group difference analyses for statistical testing. Results indicated that:(1) Gender differences. Male participants reported significantly higher acceptance of petting and sexual intercourse than females, suggesting a more open stance toward more intimate behaviors.(2) Individual behaviors. Greater frequency of smoking and drinking was significantly and positively associated with acceptance across all three behaviors. In addition, more traditional gender-role attitudes were linked to higher acceptance of kissing but lower acceptance of sexual intercourse. (3) Family interaction. Poorer-quality relationships with parents and siblings were associated with higher acceptance of sexual intercourse, suggesting that family relationship quality may shape valuejudgments. In the regression models, parental disciplinary practices showed a stable and significant negative association with acceptance across all three behaviors.Overall, although these young adults have reached the age of legal adulthood, parental discipline and guidance practices, the warmth and quality of family interactions, and youths’ own behavioral habits and gender-role attitudes continue to subtly shape the boundaries and judgments they draw around intimate behaviors. Accordingly, the design of youth-oriented policies and educational interventions should address factors at both the individual and family levels to enhance effectiveness and cultural congruence.en_US
